Photograph caption
This photograph was taken in 1880. The band did not attend the inagural NZ Contest in 1880 but competed in 1881, when it was placed second to Invercargill.
In the first 15 years of New Zealand constesting, the two bands won 11 contests. (It would have been 12 but for Oamaru Navals winning in a disupted result in 1890).
Competition between the Oamaru and Invercargill Garrison Bands was so strong that special 'challenge' contests were organised at their combined Garrison manoevres.
