Biographical / Historical
A crowd is shown gathered in Leven Street, opposite the Crescent, to meet the New Zealand Troopers who returned from the Boer War, July 12 1901. The General Post Office is shown to the left of the image. Crescent businesses include J. G. Ward (corner), National Mortgage Agency and NZ Loan Mercantile Agency. The Crescent was designed in a Victorian style by local architect Frederick William Burwell, during the 1880s.
