Biographical / Historical
Gustave Adolphe Clément [1855 – 1928] was a French manufacturer of automobiles, bicycles and aeroplanes. As a young man he trained as a locksmith, journeying around France with his trade. While working in the city of Tours he became interested in bicycles, opening a very successful manufacturing company and gaining exclusive rights in France for Dunlops’ tyres.
By 1898-1899 he had begun to produce automobiles under the company name “Clément”, then later “Bayard-Clement”. These vehicles were designed with an increasing amount of horse-power, from 9hp right up to 40hp. The later cars were more compact with less power, and used more for road-touring.
From 1908 he focused on the manufacture of aeroplanes, with his “Clément-Bayard II” being the first to cross the English Channel, in 1910. His motor-vehicles were sold internationally up to the First World War when he retired, eventually selling his company to Citroën in 1922.
