Biographical / Historical

The Invercargill Cycling Club was a social cycling society that formed circa 1884, officially becoming a club in 1893. They held club runs and races, as well as sports days for both members and amateurs, often in conjunction with other sporting clubs. In 1897 they seceded from the New Zealand Cyclist's Alliance to affliate with the League of Wheelmen.

The Union Hotel on the corner of Dee and Gala Streets, beside the old hospital, was opened by John Hill in 1876 and demolished in 1912.
