DEAR DOROTHY Many thanks for you cable of birthday greetings which I received last night and also many happy returns of your own birthday which I had just realised was this month also. I am afraid I am a bit late, however better late than never. As you will no doubt know before you receive this, we are in Italy, and I find if a big difference from Egypt. At present we cannot mention the names of any places we have seen, but you can expect a letter from me, soon, telling you all about it. The country here is very similar to that at home, and we are getting more than our share of rain, also plenty of mud. The weather is cold and I have put on my warm winter woollies. Just a mile or two away from where I am writing this, is a range of snow covered mountains. I have the ambulance parked behind a building in a farm yard with four straw stacks in it. In the building is a large vat of wine, which as you can guess we are making the most of. It is a great thing for keeping the cold out. Well Dot old dear I haven’t much more space left, so will bring this to a close now and write a letter in a few days time. Cheerio in the meantime and all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Lots of love. Your loving brother, ERIC. xxxx
