Dear Dorothy, Many thanks for your letter of 16th May which I received a couple of hours ago. I had one each from Mum, Jock and Olive, also, and am spending the afternoon answering them. So you are still hard at the nursing, you must be a full blown nurse by now. I am doing a bit of that sort of thing myself now, attending to cuts, boils and so on, and have a bit of gear which I carry in the truck with me. Jock said in his letter that he had received an airgraph from you a few days before he wrote to me. At present he is in a holiday camp near the sea and is enjoying himself, although he said he would much rather be on the sea and on his way home. It should not be long now before he is on his way. I haven’t heard from Russell, Barney

or Ces Dixon, since I last wrote to you, and will probably wait a while yet before hearing from them, as I know what they are like in regard to writing. Olive wrote another nice letter, I think I will have to make a trip up her way, she is a stunning looking girl in the photo she sent me. Olive is a grand-daughter of Aunty Minnie. I see that you are still a picture fiend, there is a mobile cinema coming to our area tonight, so I will be trotting along to see what the picture is like. I suppose Charlie has gone and got himself married by now, tell him to drop me a line sometime and also give him my regards. What’s all this about Sonny buying himself an umbrella, tell him, if a gust of wind catches it, it will lift him off his feet, or is he going to practice parachute jumping from the water tower. Give him my regards and ask him if that pop gun of his still shoots round corners. I have sent some post cards

of Rome to Mum and will send some to you as soon as I can get another large enough envelope. I am sending a post card of a beautiful lake I recently had a swim in, but that is all I will be able to tell you about it in the meantime. It reminded me of some of our good old Southland lakes. In our latest N.Z.E.F. Times which we got today is an account of the opening of our new pubs. I would like to be in the Brown Owl right now sipping a handle of Speight beer, off the ice. It must have been a big day, the opening day. I did not know that Mum was X rayed, I hope she is keeping alright and hasn’t got an ulcerated stummock (sic). See that she looks after herself and does not work too hard. I suppose you and Dad are still going to an occasional dance, wait until I get back, we will burn up a few dance floors. Do you still see Scotty Donald occasionally, if so tell him that Vic Durant and I were asking for him. I was

near my old unit one night a little over a week ago and called in to see Vic and the rest of my mates. Bob Halliday was asking for you. Well Dot old dear, this is all the news I have for you just now, so will sign off and write again later on. Give my love to all at home and also Frances Stuart and family. Cheerio and lots of love & kisses.
Your loving brother,
