Fairfax School

With the opening of a railway to Nightcaps the population in Fairfax boomed in contrast to the nearby declining Gropers Bush. In approximately 1894 the Southland Education Board decided to shift the school to Fairfax. The remaining Gropers Bush School children once again returned to Gummies Bush School for their education.

Fairfax School was intended to be a contributing school to Aparima College, established in 1973 and still running today (2020). When the children required secondary schooling, they were bused into Riverton from Fairfax. The northern boundary of the colleges area is marked by Fairfax.

In 1948 Gummies Bush School closed. This meant that five schools in the region had now closed, leaving only Fairfax School remaining.
