Glenure School
Known to locals as the 'Little Red Barn', Glenure School opened in 1924. The first teacher was Mr Richard O'Connell. A more substantial building was erected later, close to the intersection of Balfour-Glenure and Nine Mile Roads, thanks to the generosity of the McKellar Bros, owners of Ben Callum and Glenure Stations. The opening roll was 10 but it increased to 23 when flax cutters were working beside Waimea Stream and when Glenure Hill Road was being constructed.
The second teacher was Ken Stickle who remained until the end of 1928, and was succeeded by Mr St.Omer Horman, Mrs Hamer and Miss Laura Dodds who remained until Glenure consolidated with Balfour on 14/2/1932, the same day as Sandstone West School pupils.
