Biographical / Historical
Clara Faulds Stancombe, nee Williams, [1914 - 2024] was the eldest daughter of James Henry Baggott Williams [1883 - 1955] and Mary McNider [? - 1953], and sister of Mary Elizabeth Williams [1919 - 1969] and Mavis "Peggy" Williams [1921 - 2005].
Meeting on the boat journey from England, James and Mary married in the Orepuki Anglican Church in 1913. They lived in Hastings, where Clara was born, before moving to Malborough, and then Tuatapere where James worked in saw milling.
Clara attended Papatotara and Tuatapere primary schools, before boarding in Invercargill to attend Southland Technical College. She went on to work as an accountant, also volunteering for the Red Cross in Tuatapere during the war. She played basketball and tennis.
Clara married Sydney Herbert Stancombe [1903 - 1964], in 1948 in Tuatapere, where they lived until Clara moved to Invercargill in 1975.
