Robert Meredith (c.1857 - 1912) arrived in Southland from Wales in 1878 with his wife Mary Jane (c.1858 - 1888) with whom he had four children. He had two more children with his second wife Ada (c.1869 - 1909) whom he married in 1893. He married again in 1910 to an Annie Fortune.
Robert owned a grocery business on Tay Street, which expanded to have several branches around Southland. He was a member of the Gladstone Borough Council, a Freemason with the Victoria Lodge, and an avid horticulturalist.
