Oraki School
Oraki School, often referred to as the “other” Colac Bay School, opened in 1886 to help service the increasing population caused by the sawmilling and railway expansion in the area and reduce the pressure on the Colac Bay Native School. It was a simple, one room school with the desks in tiers along the back wall.
The first teacher was Herbert. A. Wild who taught from 1886 to 1903 and was the longest serving of the teaching staff. His wife, Mrs Wild also assisted and taught singing and sewing to the girls. Other teachers include Jean Borland and Mrs A. J. McDonald.
In its final years the pupils got to take a daily swim in the nearby surf. The school finally closed at the end of 1938 and the remaining pupils bussed to Riverton District High School.
