Round Hill School
The Europeans discovered gold at Round Hill in the early 1870’s. They soon decided gold was easier to obtain at Orepuki so abandoned the site. The Round Hill site was then taken over by Chinese miners and a typical gold rush style town appeared called Canton. Europeans ended up returning to the area and establishing another town nearby which, along with Canton, formed Round Hill.
Towards the end of the century the Chinese (Christian) mission church became the Round Hill School. The numbers of Chinese at Round Hill climbed to around 700 causing concern among the Europeans. However, when the gold rush ended the Chinese left without much of a trace. Only a couple of dozen Chinese remained in Round Hill after the boom.
The school operated through to 1937 when it finally closed. The remaining pupils were bussed to Colac Bay School in the 1937 Chevrolet delivery van of the Colac Bay shopkeeper, Arthur Robertson.
