Waihopai School
When this school was first opened in 1914 it was called Queens Park School. Situated on the Collegiate Reserve site at the North End of Queens Park it was the product of the union of Invercargill Park School and Gladstone (Waihopai) School.
This school was a large brick building with eight classrooms facing on to Herbert Street. It was a new building designed to accommodate 600 pupils so that it could relieve the issues facing both Park and Gladstone schools. The name only lasted one year before it was changed to Waihopai in 1915 because there was already in existence a Queens Park School in the North Island.
Due to community petitions it was decided that the two surviving classrooms of the Invercargill Park School fire in 1912 would serve as a Side School for Queens Park School so that the younger children (up to standard three) from that end of town would not have so far to walk to school. This was actioned in 1914. From 1915 onwards this Side School was known as Waihopai Side School, or amongst locals, Park Side School. In later years this same Side School became Dryburgh School for special needs children.
Waihopai School continues in 2019 on its Collegiate Reserve site with a role of approximately 360 pupils. It is a state co-ed primary school servicing year levels 1-6.
Note: For more information about Dryburgh School see Waihopai Side School.
