Overview

This interview is part of the Awarua Radio Communications Museum collection. In this interview Peter recalls his work at Awarua Radio Station as a technician before moving to Wellington to work in a radio lab. He then joined the broadcasting service and this interest combined with sound engineering eventually led to working in television at Avalon Studios. He describes getting around Wellington on a Vespa Scooter as well as the various shifts he worked. While working for Awarua Radio he travelled to Centre Island, Dog Island and Milford Sound. He details the installation and working of equipment on Motupohue Bluff Hill, as well as describing valves and valve testing; and learning Morse code and it’s use for ship to shore and Mayday calls. He describes how Awarua had the advantage of being one of the best receiving stations in the world and why this was.
