Overview
In this interview Mac tells of his family’s early history. He recalls his family’s involvement in during WW1. His parents purchased a farm at Seaward Downs in 1926. Mac recalls his education. After schooling, he started work on the family farm as his brother served in WW2 in Europe and the Pacific. Mac discusses farming at this time as well as general living. On his brother’s return, Mac went to work at a dairy factory. Later his brother took over one of their uncle’s farms and Mac took over the family farm. He describes the building of the new home on the farm after his marriage. He switched the farm from dairy to sheep and grain and recalls the processing of grain and the equipment needed. Mac describes the workings of the dairy factories in the area and the eventual closure of all but Edendale Factory. Mac was a member of the Wyndham Pipe Band for 25 years as a drummer. Mac was involved from the beginning of the establishment of CRT (Combined Rural Traders), which later became Farmlands and he explains how this came about.
