Overview

In this interview Violet recalls her family’s history in the Otago/South Otago area. She gives a detailed history of her mother’s family. Violet recalls her grandfather going to France and the being wounded at the Somme during WW1. When he came home, he farmed at Pine Bush. She recalls her memories of growing up at Pine Bush, attending school, and the polio epidemic. She talks of her memories of WW2 - the young men in the district going to war, food rationing and how her mother made their own butter, preserved eggs and fruit, made jam and did the washing in the copper. Meat was killed and shared with the neighbours. When Violet left Pine Bush School, she attended the Southland Technical College. She describes getting her driver’s licence. She would fill her father’s car with girls dressed in their ball frocks and attend the local dances. At one of these dances, she met her husband, Mac. Violet recalls their wedding at First Church Invercargill and reception at Elmwood Gardens Invercargill before going on their honeymoon to Christchurch. When they returned, they moved into their new home on the farm. She discusses Glory Boxes and the usual contents used for setting up home. She joined Women’s Division. She also recalls the fund-raising Concerts during the war and the Patriotic parcels that were sent overseas and their contents.
