Overview

In this extensive interview, Mick talks about his family history and his connection to the Tuturau area and Reko, a Ngai Tahu chief of Tuturau. Mick talks about his schooling at Matuara and Southland Technical College, his experience of WW2, including the death of his brother, Mataura town ship and his connection to his Maori relatives. He goes on to recall his work at the Southland Education Board, going to university in Auckland to study architecture part time and his various roles over his working life. He talks about the building projects he was involved with and his passion for built heritage. He was the representative for the Architectural Institute on The Southland Branch of the Historic Places Trust. He talks about the restoration of the former New South Wales Bank, his involvement with the Troopers Memorial Corner Trust and the restoration of Yule House. After his retirement Mick continued to work on restoration projects around Invercargill and Southland, including a number of churches and commercial buildings. He became involved with the Southland Heritage Building Preservation Trust, the Anderson Park Art Gallery Committee, the Salvation Army and the setting up of a tenpin bowling alley.
