Overview

In this interview Rolly tells of his father’s history of running general stores and bakeries, before shifting to Invercargill to work as a salesman for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. Rolly goes on to tell of his education and his first job at Langes Bakery. He describes preserving eggs and the process of bread making. He was unable to initially go to war as at first he had health issues then was needed by his employer. He talks of his marriage to Phyllis. Eventually he got called up for war in the Middle East. He had an interesting time there between illness and various occupations. On returning to New Zealand, he went back to work for Langes. He purchased a bakery in Riverton and details the shopping and social activities in Riverton. As larger bakeries started to take over Rolly started making Hopgood pies and these became the mainstay of his business. Rolly planned a world trip and the night before fire broke out in the bakery. He continued on the trip and took 6 months for the bakery to get up and running again. Rolly became the Mayor of Riverton for 9 years and he describes this time.
