This item is both Minute Book and Attendance Register for the period 1886 - 1896.
The Association was formed at a meeting, held in the Vestry of Longbush Presbyterian Church on 24/12/1886, with the Reverend T. Alexander in the Chair.

Materials Specific Details
The founding Committee was composed of Rev. T. Alexander (Chairman), Messrs Dawson, Aitken, Leggat, Laidlaw and Scott. Regular meetings were held on Tuesdays and fortnightly. From 1887 they opened with a prayer. At some, a member presented a paper or a guest speaker addressed the meeting. Topics covered included:
Free Trade, Custom, State Education, Irish Home Rule (debated), Govt. sale of railways, Suitable industries for Southland.
3 May 1887: Motion carried to make Ladies eligible for election as members. Their subscription was to 1/- per annum. 6 Sept 1887: Meetings to be held at Woodlands School and to be open to all. 4 Oct 1887: Committee members each to contribute a paper to the "Mirror" but to submit papers to the Editor for approval.
24 Sept 1889: After these Minutes can be found the Programme for the Social to be held 11 October 1889.
6 Mar 1890: Programme of activities for the year recorded.
25 October 1892: Meeting records cease and the book binding is broken at that point.
Loose Page: records a meeting, held 8 June 1895, to reorganise the society. It was held in the Woodlands Hall. Some minute notes are 'sketchy' and do not always follow normal practice. Only 6 meetings are recorded for 1895.
21 April 1896: A Re-Organisation Meeting was held. Full records of members enrolled given. Officers appointed, Rules.
