Biographical / Historical

Formed in Glasgow in 1923, the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) was established to help preserve Scottish dances for future generations. The title of "Royal" was bestowed on the Society by King George VI for it's service to Scottish life.

A New Zealand Scottish Country Dance Society was formed in 1957, and became a Branch of the RSCDS in 1968. The New Zealand Branch is divided into Regions, which in turn support local clubs.

Prior to 1964 Southland was part of the Otago Region, forming a sub committee of Otago in 1964. In 1970 Southland became it's own Region and over the years had clubs at Bluff, Otatara, Newfield, St Andrews (Invercargill), Waverley, Wrights Bush, Waimumu, Maitland, Grasmere, Winton, Riverton, Orepuki, Tuatapere, Isla Bank and Nightcaps.

In 2024 the Southland Region amalgamated with the Otago Region to form the Otago & Southland Region. As of 2025 the only clubs in Southland still operational are Isla Bank and Winton (est. 1967).

See A0515 for records from the St. Andrew's Club.
