The first Anglican church in the Winton area was Holy Trinity Church, designed by Frederick William Burwell, which was opened by Reverend W. P. Tanner on 8 October 1876. Before this services were held in the Courthouse or Oddfellows' Hall. The small wooden gothic style church was built by contractor Colin McKay with local timber supplied by Mr. Francis Jack of Gap Road. It remains largely unchanged apart from some repairs, removal of the bell tower (due to it rattling in the wind) and galvanised iron replacing the shingle roof. It is the oldest church of it's kind in the Southland Anglican Diocese.
In 1899 Rev. M. W. Butterfield serviced both the Riverton and Winton parishes and used to bike between them.
Some of the occupations in the early baptisms register include bushfeller, rabbiter, platelayer and cordial manufacturer. Events held in the parish included the Harvest Festival, Annual Bazaar and Sunday School picnic. Organists at the church have included Mrs Toswill, Mrs J. R. Hamilton, Mrs Skelt, Mrs McArthur, and Mrs Harbour.
