NB: Information within each chapter is written sequentially, year by year. In this way the book is more s 'Chronicle' of Guide activity.
Chapter 1. HOW IT ALL BEGAN. After the founding and success of the Boy Scout Movement, interest grew in forming a similar organisation for girls. In response, the 'Girl Peace Scouts' were set up. Their uniform included a big-brimmed hat, reminiscent of those worn by soldiers, a dark uniform dress, stockings, and staves. (See p.8 for photos of early uniforms). From the early 1920s, training schemes were introduced for Guide leaders. It was during these years that the Guide Movement spread throughout the nation. Pp.1-19.
Ch.2.1934-30.THE GROWING YEARS. This chpater chronicles Overseas visits,the First Girl Guide Jamboree, held In Hungary in 1939; National and Community involvment, especially during WWII. From the early 1920s, training schemes were introduced for Guide leaders to ensure the health and safety of participants and also the quality of the programmes offered to Guides. Pp.20-24.
CH.3.1940-1949.MOMENTOUS YEARS. The Guides made a major contribution to the War Effort, much of which is described in earlier booklets. However, in this chapter their contribution during WWI is described and also summarised in two columns on p.36. Pp.25-43.
Ch.4.1950-1960.AN INTERNATONAL DECADE. This was a decade of international travel by Girl Guides both World and Dominion-wide. From the 13th World Conference, Pacific Ranger gathering, Regional World Camps - Canada, Switzerland, The Phillippines and Great Britain - NZ was represented at all of them, as we were at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and at the Memorial Service in Westminster Abey, London, U.K. Also at World Regional Gatherings for Young Adults, held in Fiji 1959. A NZ Training Schme was set up and the first sales of Girl Guide Biscuits began in 1957. The Guide Movement was also affiliated with the Salvation Army's 'Red Shield' Movement in 1958. Pp.44-70.
CH.5. 1961-1973. YEARS OF CHANGE. Mis Ruth Herrick,Chief Commissioner, was awarded C.B.E. in 1962. Headquarters moved from Hastings to Christchurch. Betwen 1963-70, Miss Elizabeth Bennett and an Assistant visited all provinces, in the Travelling Shop, several times. The First National Convention was held in 1965 and included Brownies to Rangers. The Duke of Edinburgh Award was introduced in 1963. The Chief Guide, Lady Baden Powell, G.B.E., visited NZ in 1967. International visits to and from other countries occurred - see pp.84-100. Guide involvement in Conservation and Anti-Litter Campaigns began in 1969. These are just some of the events that took place during this decade. See pp.71-114.
