Central-Western Cricket Club

Founded in 1932 the first delegates were: Ohai - C. Mills, T. Smith and J. Harding, Nightcaps - J. Grant, P. Grant and A. Dixon, Wairio - M. Gardner, J. Barnfield and R. White, Winton - T. Horner, H. Hodges and W. Cleine.

The first clubs to register for competition were from Ohai, Nightcaps, Wairio, Winton and Limehills. Mr. Frank Boyle donated the trophy. By 1938 teams from Fairfax, Thornbury, Otautau and Oreti had joined. Most games were played on Wednesday afternoons. By 1946 clubs from Otahuti, Drummond, Waiau and Riverton were admitted.

Stand-out players of the time were Arthur Cutler (Otautau), Jack Wood (Winton), Guy Overton (Limehills), T. Freeman and W. Ashworth (Waiau), and K. Lindsay (Otahuit). The team from the 1948-9 season beat a strong Town side.

The forties and fifties saw Country players leave for Town sides due to lack of opportunity.

Some well-known sixties players included Grahma McKenzie and John Rolf (Waiau), Colin Hampton, Jim Lilico and Lindsay Cockroft (Winton), Brian Barclay (Ohai), and Jim Lindsay (Otautau).

The seventies saw great change in the admittance into the Town competition which proved to be very successful. Names from the time include Peter Hills, J.K. Lindsay, Phil Young, John Wilson and John Masefield.

There have been struggles over the years with the loss of senior teams, but the club bounced back and continues in 2019. It is based at Moores Reserve in Winton and has both senior and junior teams.
