The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is a non-political and non-religious Friendly Society with the motto "Friendship, Love and Truth". This features in their most well-known symbol of the three linked chains with the letters F, L and T. Historically the organisation provided assistance to it's members in the form of finanical help. Members also participated in recreational activites and charity work. There are also and Womens’ Lodges (which have ‘Rebekah’ as part of their name) and Junior Lodges.
Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodges first sprang up in New Zealand in 1862 and by 1879 there were 22 lodges with about 500 members. The Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows which the Independent Order had spilt off from was established in New Zealand in 1842. Other Friendly Societies included the Ancient Order of Foresters, Independent Order of Good Templars, Hibernian Society and the Ancient Order of Druids. The official dissolution of the Odd Fellows in New Zealand occured in 2015.
