00.00 Born in WAIKAKA. Father lived on home farm at WENDON VALLEY. Mother lived in WAIKAKA in the BALLANTYNE HOUSE on the hill. Parents farmed at Waikaka all of father’s life – he died at 72 and self took over the farm.

01.00 Earliest memory was being doubled to school on GEOFFREY LAMB’S bike – fell off and took a chunk out of knee.

01.30 Remembers as a teenager driving the family car and parking it in the back garage. Father concerned that he hadn’t come home. Three siblings in the family – oldest FRANCIS now deceased, sister MELVA, and self youngest. Melva lives in WAIKOIKOI.

02.20 Family home still standing and lived in.

02.50 BREAKFAST described. Dressed in short or long grey pants and cap. Attended WAIKAKA SCHOOL with 100 pupils. Played in the school’s back paddock. Mentions BRUCE SMITH, and ring barking trees belonging to HEADMASTER ALISTAIR EVANS – trees survived, but headmaster annoyed. Bruce’s father was on the school committee, and they had to appear before the Committee.

04.10 CHORES on the farm including feeding hens, dogs and ponies. Owned own pony called Tiddums. UNCLE JIM was a big influence – he and father worked together on the farm. Uncle Jim’s sons were GEOFFREY, JIMMY, ??? and IAN. Played with cousins a lot.

15.30 Father had a bad heart and was in hospital a lot, so worked with Uncle Jim. Mother fed the men on the farm and ran the house – used a horse and sledge. Describes

06.30 Parents stricter on older two children than on self, who was spoiled.

06.50 Family did not attend church, but Sunday a day of rest, except in lambing season. Favourite job on the farm was driving a tractor.

07.20 Self attended WAITAKI BOYS HIGH SCHOOL. Big change for self, and not always good memories. Made apple cider after raiding science lab and hid it under the school where it ‘went off’. Several friends went with self to Waitaki. Favourite teacher was MR ROBERTSON, who was a minister and took religious studies. Lot of teachers hard to put up with – discipline with cane.

10.00 Attended Waitaki for two years and left at age 15 in 1962. Father was unwell so worked on farm. Started off playing RUGBY for WAIKAKA, then took up GOLF at age 18 because less injuries meant less risk of not being able to help on farm.

10.50 Played golf in GORE until WAIKAKA GOLF COURSE built in 1973. DAVID AINSLEY, ROLY ROBERTSON, ALAN HERON, JIMMIE TURNBULL instrumental in setting up the Waikaka golf course. District supported the venture. Money raised by people offering interest free loans. Work done gratis. Comradeship built.

12.30 Did a little SHEARING with WALLIE DAVIDSON, but otherwise worked only on home farm. Went DEER STALKING.

13.00 Social life included attending the movies with two bottles of beer and $5.00 on a Saturday night. Played rugby. Drove father’s vehicle. Attended dances in Gore. Good friends. Mentions MERVYN GUTSCHLAG.
