Overview
In this interview, Ron recounts his upbringing on a family farm at Tuturau, Southland, his schooling at Gore High School, and his experiences during the Second World War era. Although unable to serve because of health issues, he describes wartime farming, military call-ups, and the impact of the war on family and community. The interview traces his long career in high-country sheep farming across Otago and Southland, including mustering, station management, and rural life. Dickie also reflects on his passion for mountaineering, pioneering climbs in Fiordland, Aoraki/Mount Cook, and the European Alps, as well as overseas travel and family heritage.
