WERNER, Lieselotte Renate (Lottie) interviewed by Morag Forrester
Record Group — Box: 54
Identifier: H0579
Overview
Fifty years ago, Lottie boarded ship at a Dutch port bound for Wellington. She and her fellow passengers were New Zealand immigrants under the government's assisted passage scheme for displaced persons following the end of WWII. Embarking on a new life with the help of her first employers, Sir Matthew and Lady Oram, Lottie quickly adapted to the New Zealand lifestyle. A few years later, she crossed the Tasman but unable to adjust to the hot South Australian summers, she returned to New Zealand. Working at old people's homes in Gore and Balclutha, her spare time was spent tramping some of Fiordland's Great Walks. The call of the outdoors led her to apply for a job as housekeeper at Takaro Lodge in Te Anau — an exclusive hunting/fishing enterprise considered ahead of its time in 1970. Lottie has lived in Te Anau ever since. This interview focuses on those years following Lottie's arrival in New Zealand, particularly Te Anau. It is not a full oral history.
