This interview covers the history and stories around Ken’s family property at Rakahook; his growing up there, his education which included attending Lincoln and subsequent running of the property when his father went to World wWr II. Ken and his mother went to see his father off on the ‘Empress of Britain’ and met the Maori Battalion. Ken discusses the depression and farming practices he adopted and his views on farming. In this interview Christine describes her family life on her Grandfathers farm at Waimatua. Talks about her grandfather using draught horse, harvest time, hay making and harvesting oats. Christine also looks at her mother’s Blondell family history. Her father worked in Brown Owl Café, the Grand Hotel and the Southland Hotel as Manager before family moved to the farm.

Mattie’s family lived at Hakataramea until getting a balloted farm at Beaumont around 1915. Beaumont was a thriving community until the railway closed. Grocery, butchery and bakery deliveries were once a week. Mattie describes the effects of her mother breaking her leg, her father’s ill health and her brother Alister’s war service which lead to his death in the Solomon Islands.
