Win is among the few remaining people who grew up in the Te Anau Basin when it was still considered remote and inaccessible with land covered in tussock and scrub that was only useful for grazing stock. In this interview Ross describes his experiences as a patient at Riverton Hospital in 1949 aged 13. As a result of his hip being out he spent 3 months in hospital for treatment and recovery. He describes the equipment used, the daily routines, meals and eventually leaving the hospital and the minor side effects on his life as a result of this condition.
